About this tool: ROI calculator
Return on investment (ROI) tells you how much you gained or lost compared with what you put in, as a percentage. It works for shares, a flat you rent out, an advertising campaign or equipment for a business.
ROI ignores time: 40% in one year is far better than 40% in ten. Add the number of years and the calculator also shows the compound annual growth rate (CAGR), the steady yearly rate that would give the same result.
Formula
ROI = (final value − amount invested) ÷ amount invested × 100. CAGR = (final value ÷ amount invested)^(1 ÷ years) − 1.
Worked example
You invest 10,000 and it grows to 14,000 in 3 years. Profit 4,000, ROI = 4,000 ÷ 10,000 = 40%. CAGR = 1.4^(1/3) − 1 = 11.87% a year.

Frequently asked questions
Does ROI include fees and taxes?
Only if you include them. Enter the total you paid, fees included, and the value after fees and tax, to get your real return.
What is a good ROI?
It depends on the risk and the time. Compare the yearly rate (CAGR) with what a safe savings account or an index fund would have paid.
Why can the result be negative?
If the final value is below what you invested, you lost money and the ROI is negative.
