About this tool: Average calculator
The mean is the sum of the numbers divided by how many there are. The median is the middle value once they are sorted, and it is less affected by one very large or very small number, which makes it a better picture of a typical value for things like salaries or house prices.
Separate numbers with spaces, semicolons or new lines. Write decimals with a point or a comma, so 2,5 and 2.5 both work.
Formula
Mean = sum ÷ count. Median = the middle number of the sorted list, or the mean of the two middle numbers when the count is even.
Worked example
12 18 7 25 9 14: sum 85, count 6, mean 85 ÷ 6 = 14.1667. Sorted 7 9 12 14 18 25, the two middle numbers are 12 and 14, so the median is 13.

Frequently asked questions
What is the difference between mean and median?
The mean uses every value, so extremes pull it. The median is the middle value and ignores extremes. Use the median when a few values are far from the rest.
How many numbers can I enter?
Up to 10,000. Anything that is not a number makes the tool ask you to check the list.
Can I use negative numbers?
Yes, put a minus sign in front of the number.
