From plant to profile

Green DNA connects plant anatomy with the compounds found in cannabis. The name of a variety alone tells you little about its measured composition.

Flower & trichomes

Cannabis flowers carry tiny glands called trichomes. They produce resin containing cannabinoids and other compounds.

Cannabinoids

THC is the main intoxicating cannabinoid. CBD has a different effect profile. The amounts of both vary between samples. Source

Composition

A measured THC or CBD percentage describes a sample. Names such as indica and sativa cannot reliably tell you its strength. Source

Toleration and 5 grams

Dutch law prohibits possession and sale. Under toleration policy, possession of up to 5 g is generally not prosecuted and coffeeshops may not sell more than 5 g in one transaction. Source

Age and residency

Coffeeshops are for adults aged 18 and over. The national residency criterion requires residence in the Netherlands, and enforcement varies by municipality. Source

Supply chain experiment

Breda, Heerlen and Maastricht enforce the residency criterion under the experiment. Other participating municipalities can apply it too. Source

Public spaces

Amsterdam restricts cannabis smoking in parts of the city centre. Check the official guidance and signs on the street. Source

Crossing the border

Taking cannabis out of the Netherlands is illegal. This also matters for short trips to neighbouring countries. Source

Driving

Dutch law prohibits driving under the influence. Arrange transport before consuming cannabis. Source
